On 15/06/2024, Oahu Transit Services, the private operator of Honolulu’s TheBus and TheHandi-Van, reported a cyber breach that took thebus.org, HEA GPS arrival info, and HOLO card validators offline, causing service delays and preventing normal fare collection. OTS told city officials the disruptions to the bus system and HOLO card services lasted about two weeks, and later estimated around $100,000 in lost fare revenue. DTS announced real-time GPS and HOLO readers were restored by late June. Ransomware claims were reported by third parties but remained unconfirmed; OTS said no ransom was paid.
