VIASAT KA-SAT attack disrupts service; Enercon loses wind turbine monitoring

On 24 Feb 2022, a deliberate attack on Viasat’s KA‑SAT network exploited a misconfigured VPN appliance to access trusted management systems and issue destructive commands that overwrote modem flash memory, causing tens of thousands of European broadband customers to lose service. Germany’s Enercon reported loss of remote monitoring for 5,800 wind turbines. Western governments attributed the operation to Russia’s GRU.
