CONTI ransomware cripples Costa Rica tax and customs; national emergency declared

Beginning 19/04/2022, Costa Rica’s Finance Ministry was hit by CONTI ransomware, forcing the tax (ATV) and customs (TICA) platforms offline and disrupting revenue collection and international trade. On 08/05/2022, President Rodrigo Chaves declared a national emergency. CONTI leaked hundreds of GB of government data and issued ransom demands the government refused. Education authorities also reported teacher payroll impacts linked to the outage.
