Belize Electricity cyber intrusion disrupts online services and billing partnership

Between late March and mid‑May 2023, BEL detected foreign actors in its IT network. The company reported that hackers stole and later leaked confidential employee and customer data, with the RAGNAR LOCKER ransomware group claiming responsibility. BEL said it prevented encryption and ransom lockout but disabled online bill payment and other customer online services. Belize Water Services ended a joint bill‑payment agreement, reducing payment options for customers; BEL stated its OT grid systems were not compromised.
