City of Richardson cyberattack disrupts online municipal services

An unauthorized party gained access to City of Richardson servers on 25 September 2024 and attempted to encrypt network files. Security controls contained the encryption attempt, but the city shut down internal network connectivity during response and recovery. This caused outages affecting online customer portals and later intermittent disruption to services including utility billing, online payments and the city's 24-hour response line. Emergency response remained available. The city reported full restoration of network and online services on 16 October.
