UMC Health ransomware disrupts clinical systems and forces patient diversion

UMC Health System detected malicious activity on 26 September 2024 and later confirmed that an intruder had accessed its network and deployed ransomware that made computer systems unavailable. The resulting IT outage caused UMC to divert emergency and non-emergency ambulance patients, disrupted phone and patient-portal functions and forced healthcare operations onto downtime procedures. Patient diversion continued in reduced form during recovery, while the EHR and patient-facing systems were progressively restored in October.
