Cyber intrusion pauses Birmingham licensing, tax, permitting and 311 services

The City of Birmingham experienced a network disruption in early March 2024 after an unknown third party gained unauthorized access to city systems. The incident made licensing, taxing and permitting transactions unavailable both online and in person and took the 311 call center offline, while public-safety, garbage collection and other critical services continued. The city remained open but operated multiple public-facing functions under degraded or alternative procedures while systems were restored.
