Ransomware attack on DWANGO disrupts Niconico and KADOKAWA publishing operations

A large-scale ransomware cyberattack discovered on 8 June 2024 struck DWANGO-dedicated servers in the KADOKAWA Group data center and targeted Niconico and related services. Emergency shutdowns suspended all Niconico family services and also disrupted materially connected KADOKAWA businesses: paper-book order receipt, publishing manufacturing and distribution systems, some online-shop ordering and shipments, and publication workflows. KADOKAWA later reported that shipments of existing publications fell to roughly one-third of normal levels and major Niconico services did not resume until 5 August.
