DDoS attacks on SURF disrupt connectivity across Dutch education and research institutions

SURF reported large-scale DDoS attacks against its network on 15-17 January 2025. The attacks caused slow or unavailable connectivity at education, research and healthcare institutions across the Netherlands. Maastricht University reported periods without internet, Fontys' network was unreachable for hours for approximately 43,000 students and staff, and some institutions postponed examinations because of the disruption.
