Ransomware attack interrupts digital government services at the Province of Cosenza

In early October 2023, the Italian Province of Cosenza suffered a ransomware attack in which attackers encrypted data on individual computers and demanded payment. Provincial officials stated that the central system resisted compromise, but the administration was forced to suspend digital activities as a containment measure. Citizens could not access the provincial website or obtain responses to digital requests and emails. The disruption therefore affected public-facing government service delivery, despite the limited encryption reported by provincial leadership. October 4 is the documented disclosure date; the precise intrusion date remains uncertain.
