DataNet Systems compromise forces the DC Board of Elections website offline

On October 5, 2023, DataNet Systems detected unauthorized access to a system used to provide voter information for the District of Columbia Board of Elections. The Board subsequently confirmed that the compromised infrastructure belonged to DataNet, its website-hosting provider, rather than to the Board's internal systems. On October 6, the Board took its public website offline and replaced it with a maintenance page; the website remained unavailable on October 16. This produced a prolonged interruption of public-facing voter-information services through a directly compromised technology supplier. Online voter registration remained available and secure, and no wider interruption of election operations is established.
