Auckland Transport cyberattack disables AT HOP payment and top-up services

Beginning September 13, 2023, a cyber incident affecting part of Auckland Transport's AT HOP fare system disrupted payment and ticketing operations. Online card top-ups became unavailable, payment-card transactions at ticket machines and customer service centers were restricted, and retailers could not process normal AT HOP top-ups or concessions. Auckland Transport rebuilt affected systems and progressively restored services during the following week, with some online functions and payment processing issues persisting longer. Buses, trains and ferries continued carrying passengers, including those unable to add funds to their cards. Auckland Transport subsequently described the earlier incident as ransomware-related. The operational consequence was disruption of fare collection and customer transaction services rather than a confirmed interruption of passenger transportation.
