Cyberattack forces closure of municipal and social services in Herselt

In early April 2023, Belgium's municipality of Herselt experienced a cyberattack facilitated by compromised credentials belonging to an external software supplier. The municipality disconnected affected systems, causing temporary closure of municipal offices, the public library and social-welfare services, while email and normal digital communications became unavailable. Services resumed progressively by April 11. Local reporting indicates that suspicious activity may have first been detected on March 31, before the more visible early-April service interruptions.
