White Rabbit ransomware attack disrupts Comune di Taggia municipal administrative systems

On March 11, 2023, the Comune di Taggia in Italy detected a ransomware intrusion affecting municipal workstations, servers and databases. The municipality subsequently identified the ransomware variant as White Rabbit. The attack encrypted information, impaired the availability and integrity of municipal data and interrupted normal administrative system operations. Municipal employees and technical personnel undertook emergency containment and restoration measures, with the mayor confirming that services had been restored by March 15. Subsequent municipal disclosures reported that personal data had also been stolen and published. The event materially disrupted the municipality's ability to execute digital administrative workflows, although the available evidence does not establish a prolonged shutdown of all public services.
