University of Waterloo email intrusion leads to temporary authentication shutdown

On 30 May 2023, Waterloo discovered a breach of its on-premises Microsoft Exchange service and stopped an attempted ransomware intrusion. Security response disabled account provisioning and later forced a two-to-six-hour authentication shutdown, limiting access to academic and library systems; cloud email for nearly all users remained available.
