Cyberattack disrupts municipal services and administrative systems in Lowell

On April 24, 2023, the City of Lowell detected malicious network activity and isolated municipal systems, leaving servers, telephones, email and administrative applications unavailable. City services experienced delays, a municipal meeting was canceled, and some payment records could not be updated normally. Emergency 911 services and Lowell Public Schools were reported unaffected. The Play ransomware operation claimed responsibility, but its technical claims should not be treated as independently confirmed.
