Klinikum Lippe cyberattack causes multi-site hospital IT and workflow disruption

On November 17, 2022, Klinikum Lippe detected a major external cyberattack affecting its hospital IT infrastructure. The incident caused partial IT outages across the Detmold, Lemgo and Bad Salzuflen facilities. The hospital disconnected infrastructure from external networks, temporarily lost normal electronic communication channels and relied on telephone, fax and analog procedures for selected operational workflows, including meal ordering and clinical documentation. Subsequent hospital disclosures confirmed unauthorized access and encryption of virtual disks. Although patient treatment and emergency admissions remained available throughout the incident, supporting hospital operations and administrative service processes were materially degraded. The hospital was still reporting externally restricted communication and continuing IT disturbances on November 30.
