BlackCat ransomware cripples Suffolk County government services and real-estate filings

On September 8, 2022, BlackCat/ALPHV ransomware operators encrypted Suffolk County government systems and stole data. County websites and public services became unavailable, including essential government functions and the County Clerk's land-record search and document-recording services. The resulting inability to search or record deeds and mortgages disrupted title-insurance operations and delayed property closings; county contractors also encountered payment-processing problems. A county legislative investigation estimated response and remediation costs at approximately USD 25 million. The incident concerns Suffolk County, New York, not the United Kingdom.
