Elgin County cyberattack disables public website and email for almost four weeks

An unauthorized party compromised the network of Elgin County in Ontario, Canada. The county shut down its network on April 1, 2022, leaving its public website and external email services unavailable until April 27. Incoming public communications during that period were not received, disrupting digital access to county services. County officials subsequently acknowledged unauthorized access and the publication of approximately 26,000 files, including some sensitive personal information. The Conti gang made a claim about the county, but the claim alone does not establish confirmed operator attribution or prove encryption.
