Conti ransomware disrupts JASEC administrative billing and customer payments

On April 23, 2022, the Conti ransomware incident encrypted internal administrative and accounting systems at JASEC, the public electricity and internet provider in Cartago, Costa Rica. The company disabled its website, email, online customer services and billing/payment infrastructure, leaving subscribers unable to pay for electricity and internet until collection channels were progressively restored in May. Costa Rica’s technology ministry explicitly stated that the underlying electricity and internet services remained operational; no utility-delivery outage is attributed to this attack.
