Pottawatomie County ransomware disrupts tax, licensing and public administration services

A ransomware attack on September 17, 2021 encrypted several Pottawatomie County servers in Kansas, impairing treasurer functions, tax handling, drivers-license services, public geographic-information access and county email. Offices used manual workflows with slower transactions for residents; 911 and emergency systems were separately isolated and remained functional. The county publicly documented a USD 71,250 ransom payment and additional decryption fees.
